Securing AI agents and MCP tools: least privilege, approvals and audit

AI agents now read and change data in ServiceNow, CRMs and internal APIs through MCP. The risks — inherited privileges, sensitive data, no audit trail — and the controls that address them.

AI is no longer only answering questions. Agents built with Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot Studio now connect to company systems — ServiceNow, Salesforce, Jira, internal APIs — usually through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). They search records, update tickets and trigger actions. That is where the value is, and where the new risks are.

Three risks that come with agents

  • Inherited privileges. An agent typically runs with an account that can do far more than its task needs: read HR cases, export every customer, delete records.
  • Sensitive data in tool results. A ticket or a CRM record contains names, phone numbers and sometimes health or HR details — all of which flow into the AI model.
  • No audit trail. When something goes wrong, nobody can say which agent did what, with which data, and who allowed it.

The controls that matter

  1. One enforcement point. Put a gateway between agents and tools, so every call is checked — instead of trusting each integration separately.
  2. Least privilege per tool and action. Allow "read incident" and "add work note"; block "read HR case" and "delete"; regardless of what the underlying account could do.
  3. Field-level data rules. Decide which fields of a record the agent may see. Hide caller names, emails and phone numbers from the model — while the tool still receives the real value when it needs it.
  4. Human approval for high-impact actions. Closing a P1 incident, changing a deal value or making a payment waits for a person.
  5. A complete record. Every read, change and approval in one audit trail, sent to your SOC.

How WALLIOO does it

WALLIOO Gateway sits between AI agents and your MCP tools and APIs. It applies tool permissions and field rules on every call, replaces personal data with codes before it reaches the model, pauses sensitive actions for approval in WALLIOO Control (or Slack and Teams), and records every decision. Frequently asked questions

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI assistants and agents connect to tools and data sources — for example ServiceNow, a CRM or an internal API.

Can an agent still work if it cannot see personal data?

Yes. With WALLIOO the agent sees codes instead of names and emails, and when it calls a tool, the tool receives the real value. The work gets done; the model never sees the personal data.

Where are approvals given?

In WALLIOO Control, or by email, Slack and Teams. Every approval or denial is recorded with who decided and when.
